MYTHS VS. FACTS

The tragic story of Broadway actress Peg Entwistle has been bantered about for 75 years yet no one attempted to gather the entire body of known facts into a single ministry of work until now.

Welcome to the truth about Millicent Lilian Entwistle. Known professionally as Peg, she is often referred to as “The Hollywood Sign Girl” for her 1932 suicide from atop Tinsel Town’s famous landmark.

During extensive research for her biography I have come across many misconceptions, half truths, full-blown lies and overall laziness concerning Peg, a woman many consider to be Hollywood's most infamous symbol of unrequited stardom. (Her stage resume disputes "unrequited.")

Here is one blatant example of poor or non-existent research resulting in myth.

MYTH:  In his 2001 book Lost Hollywood, David Wallace writes that Peg came to Hollywood in 1929. His context and suggestion is that she relocated in '29.

He says that after Peg jumped from the Sign she landed on cactus, survived, and then received a number of operations, the suggestion being she died at a hospital and not on the hill.

In 2002, author
Paul Zollo retold Wallace's cactus/operations myth nearly word for word in his book Hollywood Remembers.

While
Zollo also gives no sources for this ridiculous tale, he does list David Wallace and Lost Hollywood in the bibliography.

FACT:  Yes, Peg was in Los Angeles for part of 1929 (in the Spring), but she was here on a stop during her 1928-1929 season with the Theater Guild's Ten-year Anniversary Tour. From the context of Wallace's Lost Hollywood it is obvious he (and Zollo) hadn't known this. Wallace in particular wants you to believe that Peg had forsaken Broadway--that she had given up the stage for a shot at films.

Peg stayed with her family in their Beachwood Drive house whenever she was in town. However, she moved on with the tour in 1929 and did not return to Los Angeles until 1932 when she was brought here especially to co-star with Billie Burke and Humphrey Bogart in The Mad Hopes, a play written by Romney Brent--Peg's friend and former co-player.

As to claims that Peg had several operations following her jump: the Los Angeles Police say she was dead when they found her 100 feet below the H.

I have sifted through hundreds of news items and official documents and not a one mentions Peg being found alive, brought to a hospital, or having had even a single operation, never mind "several operations."

I'm holding my original 1927 copy of Peg's script and production book of her break-out Broadway play Tommy. Milton is a wonderful man and a grand time was had by all!

Hope Anderson's film is amazing!
